Change Agent

North country tenants recently observed a seasonal milestone; spring. Usually, seasonal change is welcome for change devoted earth dwellers. We like when seasons change.

Evidence of this change comes from the increased snow melting power of earth’s nearest star, the sun. Yet, we give little thought to the reason. We go about our lives full of work and play, recreation and sleep without considering why the sun’s heat becomes more apparent; or that the season is changing. Don’t feel guilty. We humans can do nothing about it anyway.

It’s because of a 23.5 degree list or tilt from vertical. It is a wonderful decimal number. Wonderful because it is this tilt which allows us to inhabit the blue planet.  Scientists use the word obliquity in place of tilt. It is actually an average number for the degree of the tilt of the earth’s axis. The tilt ranges between 22.1 and 24.5. These variations or earth wobbles are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and earth’s neighbor planets.

Without this tilt from vertical, life could not exist. Earth tilt provides moderate seasons, and prevents most temperature extremes except in the arctic regions. Earth’s neighboring uninhabitable planets have axis tilts from zero on Mercury to 90 on the planet Uranus. Only Mars is close to that of earth, its axial tilt is 25 degrees. Mars has seasons as well, but we know, there are no Martians.

Spring has come to the north country. The earth tilt now permits the sun’s energy to become more and more direct. This added solar energy does unique things. Leaves melt their way into ice. The warming solar energy on the leaf surface radiates through the thin leaf and slowly melts the ice beneath. This causes the leaf to sink into the ice leaving the imprint of its shape at the surface while the leaf sinks lower into the ice. Beautiful. Increased solar energy melts ice in places where there is water movement. Lake ice shrinks. Birds begin their seasonal transfer from wintering habitat to places suitable for nests and raising young.

Change; is an earth constant. As occupants of earth we go about our business of living unaware of earth orbit, obliquity, or even the change of the season. While the change is gradual, it is steady and powerful. Even careful observers are unable to witness the subtle shifts in the season. The big picture view of the change from season to season to a careful eyewitness brings regular joy. It also brings awe.

There is nothing we can do to bring about seasonal change. No human orders the obliquity. No human controls earth orbit. No hand, woman or man, turns up the amount of solar radiation. No mandate, edict, directive, or decree brings these changes. We are not powerful enough. We do not have the authority, the influence, or command of natural things.

God does. That’s good.

Seasonal change announces God’s power. It roars Creator. Change is entirely within God’s jurisdiction. The Psalmist said, “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.” Psalm 115:3 It pleases Him to change seasons.  Isaiah gives speaks of the authority only God possesses. The Lord of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand. Isaiah 14:24 This change is God’s plan. He directs it, orders it, brings it to pass.

It is God who is Master of change. He is Lord of seasons.

A conclusion drawn from all of this;. If God controls earth orbit, seasons, migration, and all the earth, what does this mean for the humans who reside on earth? Two very good things: God is in control, and we are safe. Besides being all-powerful, God is love, It pleases God is to love you and I. What God has purposed is to rescue all by sending a Savior; Jesus.

We delight when spring begins. It is confidence inspiring evidence. Evidence of the great eternal love of God. In this is real comfort. Welcome spring! Thank you God; you are the perfect Change Agent.
