Power and Divinity on Display

Power was on display today.  You could see divinity too. Water vapor, invisible to the human eye became visible this morning. A light coating of frost formed on trees and plant stems and leaves. The beauty of water in solid form was on display. Frost forms when outside surfaces cool below the dew point. This occurred early today. The dew point is the temperature of the air at which dew will form. However, when the air temperature is below freezing dew becomes stunning crystals of ice. Another name for it is hoarfrost. Call it frozen dew. Another reminder, worth repeating, it is beautiful.DSC_0176_1493sig

The science behind hoarfrost is well documented. We can explain with clarity how it forms. Thousands of photos reveal the beauty and form of frost. Hundreds of scientific documents describe in detail the formation of frost. What science is unable to do is explain why hoarfrost forms. Why does water vapor behave in the way it does in temperatures below 32 F? The how is known. The why is the delightful and beautiful unknown. The why is the part “left out.” (blog, “Enough Left Out”)DSC_0185_1502sig

The why question points us to the source of frost. God, Creator of all things living and unliving knows the why. For now we are given the opportunity to understand the “how.” We have described the what, how, when, where, and certainly the Who of frost formation. The details of “why” remain for now with God the “frost former.”DSC_0187_1504sig

One of the power questions God asked Job was about frost. God’s question provides insight and reason to explain the unknown “why.” God asked him this in Job 38:29, “And who do you think is the father of rain and dew, the mother of ice and frost? You don’t for a minute imagine these marvels of weather just happen, do you?” The Psalmist who wrote Psalm 147 wrote words of praise to God in all 20 verses of this praise Psalm. In verse 16 we read this, “He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes.”DSC_0196_1513sig

While frost gives clear evidence of the power of God, it also reveals the divine nature of God. God is powerful. He creates frost. God is divine. He makes frost beautiful and pleasing to the human eye. God is love. When he formed the first two humans, he made them with an eye for earth beauty. Frost is earth beauty.DSC_0205_1522sig

Consider frost, hoarfrost if you wish evidence of the love of God for you. My limited brain cannot comprehend what issues you face today. God can. Remember, One who is powerful enough to create frost for a morning, and perfectly divine to make it beautiful for human pleasure is easily powerful and divine enough to love and care for you.DSC_0209_1526sig

What does a grandfather, husband, former public school teacher and Education Specialist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service with many life experiences in nature do with them? A naturalist with a camera-makes outside a daily destination. My confidence is that God will guide my words, and photos. We live in a magnificent world, come and look at it with me through eyes, lens and words. To God be the glory. Current Profile Photo- Prickly Ash, the name summarizes this brushy undergrowth well. It fascinates me with its thorny branches. Seeing a vine wrapped around the trunk called for a photo.
